Clubs' revenue in the 2022/23 Champions League

It's not just about sporting success when clubs play in the Champions League, it's about a huge amount of money. Not qualifying for the Champions League is financially detrimental, especially for clubs outside of England where TV money is less lucrative. Manchester United, Arsenal FC, Spurs and Liverpool FC are desperately fighting to finish fourth in the Premier League, not only to play in the Champions League, but also for the prize money.

The prize money for the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League illustrates that reaching the group stage of the Champions League is the main goal for many clubs, especially those from smaller nations with fewer resources. The prize money for the Europa League and Europa Conference League are not far apart, but the Champions League is by far the most lucrative competition. The winner of the Champions League receives a total of €83.84 million in prize money for participating in each round, compared to €22.63 million for the Europa League and €14.54 million for the Europa Conference League.
