General
Empoli FC has existed since August 1920, when Empoli FC and US Empolise Football Department merged. The club's traditional color is azure and the club plays at the Stadio Carlo Castellani in Empoli, which has a capacity of around 16,000 spectators.

In the first years of its existence the club took part in the third and second highest championship in Tuscany and remained a provincial club. Over the years the club changed its name several times, including Associazione Sportiva Fascista Empoli, Dopolavoro Empoli and AC Empoli before taking the name FC Empoli in November 1944.

The club rose to Serie B for the first time in 1945/46, but were relegated five years later. After six seasons, FC Empoli returned to Serie C but was relegated again. In 1982/83 they achieved their second promotion to Serie B, and only three years later the club gained promotion to Serie A for the first time.

In recent years, FC Empoli has fluctuated between the top two Italian leagues. In 2004/05 the club was promoted back to Serie A and finished eleventh in the table for the season. In the 2006/07 season, the club qualified directly for the UEFA Cup but were relegated to Serie B that same year, finishing eighteenth in the table.

In the 2013/14 season, FC Empoli returned to Serie A again, where it was able to remain in the following season.
