In the first years of its existence the club took part in the third and second highest championship in Tuscany and remained a provincial club. Over the years the club changed its name several times, including Associazione Sportiva Fascista Empoli, Dopolavoro Empoli and AC Empoli before taking the name FC Empoli in November 1944.

The club rose to Serie B for the first time in 1945/46, but were relegated five years later. After six seasons, FC Empoli returned to Serie C but was relegated again. In 1982/83 they achieved their second promotion to Serie B, and only three years later the club gained promotion to Serie A for the first time.
