Previously, Russian-Israeli billionaire Roman Abramovich had been the owner of the club since 2003. In February 2022 he handed over the management of the club to the trustees of the Chelsea Foundation, a week later he put the club up for sale.

Chelsea Football Club spent more than €600m on transfers in the 2022/23 season, setting a new record. Under the new owner, the club reached new dimensions. Nicolas Fernandez's €121m transfer is the most expensive transfer in Premier League history, making him the most expensive midfielder and Argentina footballer of all time.
