Borussia Mönchengladbach is a sports club based in Mönchengladbach on the Lower Rhine. The club has the club colors black, white and green and, with over 94,200 members, is one of the largest sports clubs in Germany and ranks 17th worldwide. With 1,000 fan clubs nationwide, the club is one of the most popular football clubs in Germany. In addition to the men's soccer department, which consists of a professional and amateur squad as well as several youth teams, VfL also has a women's soccer team, a handball and table tennis department.

The first team of footballers was promoted to the Bundesliga in 1965 and won a total of five national championship titles, three DFB Cup wins and two UEFA Cup wins. In the all-time Bundesliga table, the club is in sixth place. The team became particularly well-known in the 1970s for their fast-paced and offensive style of play, with which they dominated the Bundesliga primarily with young players. This earned the team the nickname "Fohlenelf".

The club's professional football department is run by the limited company Borussia VfL 1900 Mönchengladbach GmbH, which is wholly owned by the club.
