An analysis of the Deloitte Money League 2023 shows that English football clubs were the most financially successful in the 2021/22 season. Of the top 20 clubs, eleven were from England, which further highlighted the financial dominance of the Premier League and showed how these clubs were better able to respond to the COVID-19 crisis.
The number of English clubs in the Money League has steadily increased over the past ten years, while clubs from other "Big Five" leagues that regularly participate in UEFA club competitions have increasingly been displaced by clubs from England that do not participate in these competitions and have medium-sized stadiums.
Overall, 16 of the top 30 clubs are English, which corresponds to 80% of all clubs in the Premier League. The remaining 14 places are occupied by five La Liga clubs, three clubs from Serie A and the Bundesliga, and one club from Ligue 1, all of which have participated in UEFA club competitions and played in stadiums with a capacity of 40,000 or more (and over 60,000 for all except Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, Sevilla, and Eintracht Frankfurt). Only Benfica (24th) and Ajax (27th) have made it into the top 30 as representatives from outside the "Big Five" leagues, driven by consistent performances in Europe with a quarterfinal and round of 16 appearance in the UEFA Champions League.
